Located in the English borough of Hertfordshire is the town of Watford. The British town is about 17 miles away from the North of London and is situated inside the circumference of the M25 Motorway. The large town has a population of over 90,000 people and it was built along a road running uphill from the River Colne.
The first settlement recorded in Watford was during 1007 AD where the Anglo-Saxons named the town “Watforda” which refers to the ford in the town. The land was under ownership to St Albans Abbey until the 16th century. Throughout the 12th century, St Albans Abbey was granted a charter to hold a market in Watford which began the construction of St Mary’s Church. The settlement helped the town grow in size and population as it benefitted from trade routes from the north-south route of London. During the Industrial Revolution, Watford remained a cottage and agricultural community until the Grand Junction Canal and the London and Birmingham railway lines were built during the 1800’s. These new buildings brought brilliant transport links in the town which enhanced industrial growth throughout the 19th and 20th Centuries. During the 1920’s Watford was the main source of production for printing by having the largest printing factory in the world. These prints were taken over by the government who used them as propaganda during the Second World War. After the war, the printing industry declined which meant that Watford’s industry became obsolete. The town of Watford is now a modern 21st century town with 43 public parks, recreation grounds an allotments where 6 of them have been awarded a Green Flag award.
Watford is also home to the professional football club, Watford FC. The club have reached the 1984 FA Cup Final and have won the Nationwide Division Two Championship in 1998. Watford FC have been hugely recognised across the world as global superstar Elton John was a lifelong fan of the club and then was chairman. The musician still remains as an Honorary Life President of the club.
The town has also has had very notable people who were born in Watford. These include super-heavyweight boxer Anthony Joshua, lead singer of Duran Duran Simon Le Bon, Carry on actor Terry Scott and former footballer and manager Gareth Southgate.
