Situated in the metropolitan borough of South Yorkshire is the city of Sheffield. The British city name came from the River Sheaf which runs through the city. The first record of the foundations of Sheffield was 12,800 years ago during the Upper Palaeolithic era. During the Iron Age, Sheffield was the southernmost territory of the Pennine tribe which were called the Brigantes. The tribe built several forts all over Sheffield making it one of the biggest strongholds at the time. After the Roman period, Sheffield was part of the southern part of the Celtic kingdom of Elmet with the River Don and River Sheaf forming the boundary between the Celtic Kingdom and the Kingdom of Mercia. From the early 1600’s and onwards, Sheffield became the main centre of manufacturing in England outside of London which mainly involved steel.
Sheffield is home to two of the biggest Universities in the United Kingdom: The University of Sheffield and the Sheffield Hallam University. Both of the Sheffield Universities have a combination of over 65,000 students enrolling every year. The University of Sheffield was originally a college which then gained University status in 1905. The Sheffield Hallam University has a student population of over 37,000 students making it the third largest in the United Kingdom. The University delivers over 700 courses and its history goes back to the 1800’s. Sheffield also has 137 primary schools and 26 secondary schools where 9 of them have sixth for centres. The city also has five independent schools and 12 special schools.
Sheffield is also known to have the world’s first-ever official football club, Sheffield F.C. and the world’s second ever which is Hallam FC. Hallam FC also play at the world’s oldest football ground which is in the suburb of Crosspool. The sporting city is also known for having one of the most competitive local football derbies with Sheffield United and Sheffield Wednesday which is also known as the Steel City Derby. Sheffield United (also known as the Blades due to the history of the city’s steel production) plays their home games at the 32,609 seater Bramall Lane. The football club have won many trophies which include the 1899, 1902, 1915 and 1925 FA Cups.
The city of Sheffield has also become home to many famous musical acts which include Def Leppard, Artic Monkeys, Bring me the Horizon just to name a few. There are a huge amount of festivals which include the Sensoria Music & Film Festival and the Tramlines Festival which attracts thousands of people to come to this artistic city.
Sheffield also has two large theatres which are the Lyceum Theatre and the Crucible Theatre. The Crucible was opened in 1971 and has been through a £15 million refurbishment during 2007 and 2009 and then hosted the 2008 and 2009 World Snooker Championships. Touring West End productions perform regularly at the Lyceum theatre making it a very popular destination in the Midlands of England.
