Within the county of Wiltshire lies the great town of Swindon. The town is located in the south of England between Bristol and Reading and has a population of over 150,000 people. Swindon was part of the Town Development Act in 1952 which led to a major increase of population.
The British town’s first settlement was founded by the Anglo-Saxons on top of a limestone hill. During the 1800’s, Swindon was a small market town which is now known as Old Town. Throughout the Industrial Revolution, Swindon started to grow rapidly as it started the construction of the Wilts and Berks Canal in 1810 and the North Wilts Canal in 1819. These pivotal canals brought trade back into the industrial town therefore increasing the population. Swindon is also famously known for its railway lines. The British icon Isambard Kingdom Brunel, built the Swindon Works which was mostly used for repairs and maintenance of locomotives on the Great Western railway. The Great Western Railway is a small railway village which used to house the employers there.
