Southampton is the largest city in Hampshire having a population of over 250,000 people. The British city is located on the South coast of England which is over 70 miles away from London. Southampton is well known as a major sea port building some of the largest cruise ships in the world. There are two rivers that flow through Southampton: The River Test and the River Itchen. The cultural city can also be known as “So’ton” or “Soton” as an abbreviation.
The first evidence of Southampton comes from the Stone Age following the Roman invasion of Britain in 43 AD when the Romans completed the conquering of the local Britons in 70 AD. Once this was conquered, the fortress settlement of Clausentum was settled. This settlement was an important trading port of Winchester. This settlement was abandoned in 410 AD and the Anglo Saxons formed a larger settlement which was called Hampton. The Vikings then raided the settlement in 840 AD creating the 10th century settlement of Southampton. After the Norman Conquest in 1066, Southampton became a major port of transit between London and the city and has grown ever since.
