The town of Reading dates back to the 8th century when the town came to be known as Readingum. Reading is a large town situated in the county of Berkshire. The Borough of Reading has a population of over 150,000 people and is currently representing two members of the UK parliament. It is located in the Thames Valley area at the meeting points of the River Thames and River Kennet. Reading is also known as the biggest town in the United Kingdom.
This historic town was hugely important during the medieval period, as the site of the royal monastery of Reading Abbey. During the English Civil War, Reading was dramatically affected with a major siege and loss of trade. The town also played a significant role during the Revolution of 1688, as pivotal military battles were fought on the streets of the town. Reading is also famously known for its Great Western Railway service, seed growing, baking and its brewery.
The 16th oldest school in England is the Reading School. There are over forty schools in reading, six of them being secondary schools. For further education, Reading College has been established since 1955 teaching over 8000 students on over 800 courses. The University of Reading was built in 1892 as a partner of the globally recognised Oxford University. The Reading University received its Royal charter in 1926 from King George V and was the only University to receive its charter between the two world wars, this is therefore called a red brick University. Reading is ranked in the top 200 Universities in the world ranking at a high 156th position in the 2015 QS World University Rankings. The Reading University is also one of the leading research Universities in the UK.
Reading also has some very famous landmarks within the large town. The Maiwand Lion in Forbury Gardens is a huge statue which commemorates the 328 officers of the Royal Berkshire Regiment who dies in the Battle of Maiwand in 1880. Another iconic building in reading is The Blade. The Blade is a 14 story building which was completed in 2009. The building is over 400ft tall and can be seen across the town.
