The city of Chelmsford is located in the county of Essex in the East of England. The British city is about 30 miles away from London and has a population of over 110,000 people. Chelmsford was granted city status from Queen Elizabeth II on the 6th of June 2012.
The first settlement of Chelmsford was recorded during the Neolithic age in the Springfield suburbs. The town was occupied by the Romans and a fort was built in 60 AD. The town was then developed in into a market place of Caesar which was in honour of bearing the Imperial Prefix. After the Romans left, the town disappeared until the 13th century when the settlement was redeveloped as a county town of Essex. Throughout World War II, Chelmsford was an integral point for light engineering for aircraft of the Luftwaffe and by missile. The worst attach on Chelmsford was on the 19th December 1944, when a rocket hit a residential street killing 39 people. The attack was meant for the Hoffman’s ball bearing factory which was key to the war effort. Since the 1980’s, military defence industries declined and hit Chelmsford’s economy badly and the majority of war industries were sold to BAE. The British town is now part of a major redevelopment plan which includes a new bus station, luxury apartments and a shopping centre known as the “Marconi Plaza”.
