Local Government

In the year 1974, Teesside borough was incorporated into the non-metropolitan county of Cleveland. Hartlepool and Gainsborough town was also included in this. Teesside area was divided among the boroughs of Langbaurgh, Middlesbrough and Stockton-On-Tees. In 1996, Banham Review recommended the division of the county of Cleveland into four independent unitary authority boroughs of Stockton, Redcar and Cleveland, Hartlepool and Middlesbrough. The local people did not appreciate this promotion. According to them, the local government is doing the unnecessary and unwanted rebranding. In the year 1998, the Darlington Borough became an autonomous unitary authority.
