Manchester is one of the biggest cities in the UK with a population of over half a million people. The metropolitan borough in Greater Manchester situates within the United Kingdom’s second most populous area with over 2.5 million people living there.

Manchester gained its city status in 1853 and was the first new British city for three hundred years. Manchester also has the longest river navigation canal in the world which was opened in 1894. Unfortunately, the Manchester Ship Canal’s fortunes declined after the Second World War and then was regenerated in 1996.

There are three very popular Universities situated in Manchester which are The University of Manchester, The Manchester Metropolitan University and the Royal Northern College of Music. The University of Manchester is the largest in the UK and was built in 2004 which was part of a merger of the Victoria University of Manchester which was founded in 1904. The Manchester Metropolitan was formed by three colleges in 1970 and gained University status in 1992.

The historic city of Manchester began at about 79 AD when a civilian settlement was built (which was part of the Roman Fort called Mancunium). During the Middle Ages, Manchester remained as a town, but then grew at an extraordinary rate throughout the 19th century. This expansion of the town increased productivity in the textile and cotton trade making the city a central point of the Industrial Revolution.

Many famous music groups have emerged from Manchester which include: Oasis, Take That, The Smiths, Elbow, Buzzcocks and many more. Manchester was also recognised as the dynamic force behind The Stone Roses, Monkees and The Chemical Brothers. The most popular music venue in Manchester is the Manchester Arena. This venue has over 20,000 seats and is the largest arena of its type in Europe. The Manchester Arena was also awarded International Venue of the Year in 2007. Other iconic venues in Manchester include The Manchester Apollo, Albert Hall and the Manchester Academy. There are also some smaller venues within the city which include the Band on the Wall, the Night and Day Café, the Ruby Lounge and the Deaf Institute.

Manchester is also hugely known as a city of sport, especially in football. The cultural city has two Premier League football clubs, Manchester United and Manchester City. Manchester City play at the City of Manchester Stadium while Manchester United play at Old Trafford.  The City of Manchester Stadium was originally built as the main athletics stadium for the 2002 commonwealth games and then was reconstructed for the football club. The two stadiums have hosted some of the most iconic sporting events in history such as the FIFA World Cup 1966, Olympic Football, The UEFA European Football Championship, UEFA Championship Final, FA Cup Finals and three League Cup Finals.
