Located in the East Midlands of England, Leicester city lies on the River Soar and at the edge of the National Forest. It is also known to be the burial place for King Richard III. Leicester city is the 11th largest by population in England and 13th largest in the United Kingdom. Accordingly, in a recent 2011 census, it states the population is roughly 330,000. The climate of Leicester implies you can see highs as 35 degrees during the summer and lows as -16 during the winter.
In fact, Leicester is one of the oldest cities in England, with a history going back to at least two millennia. When encountered by the Romans, the native Iron Age settlement at the site seems to have developed in the 2nd or 1st centuries. Although roundhouses from this era have been excavated and seem to have clustered along roughly 8 hectares of the east bank of the Soar above its confluence with the Trent, little is known about this settlement or the condition of the River Soar at this time. The Soar was split up into two channels: a main stream to the east and a narrower channel on the west, which includes a marshy island between. The settlement seems to have controlled a ford across the larger channel.
Surprisingly Leicester only has 6 universities that are occupied by lots of students. It is the home of a number of comprehensive schools and independent schools. Leicester Grammar school, a HMC member school, was originated in the 1980s after the city’s loss of its state-funded grammar schools. It has been reported than when the Local Education authority, in Leicester City, initially had a troubled history when formed in 1997 as part of the local government reorganisation which soon lead onto a 1999 Ofsted inspection stating there were “few strengths and many weaknesses” although since then there have been improvements.
Sport in Leicester includes a variety of professional and amateur sports. There are a mixture of professional and semi-professional sports teams listed here: Leicester City (football), Leicester Warriors & Riders (basketball), Leicester Tigers (rugby union), and Leicester Lions (speedway) and Leicestershire County Cricket Club. In Oadby, south of the City, is where Leicester Racecourse is situated. If you didn’t know this by now, Leicester Tigers, on Welford Road, are one of the most excellent Rugby Union teams in Europe, having won the European cup twice, the first tier of English Rugby ten times and the Anglo-Welsh cup seven times. Notable former players include England’s Rugby World Cup winning captain Martin Johnson, Dean Richards, Austin Healey and Neil Back. In addition, Leicester City Football Club have also had a fair degree of success. With them championing to the second tier of the English league system on seven occasions. Through this time they have won three Football League Cups and reached the FA Cup Final four times although they have sadly never won the actual trophy. With their current stadium ‘King Power Stadium’ located south of the city centre, will you visit to watch their games?

Whether it’s raining or not, the Curve will give you state-of-the-art quality drama, comfy seats and fantastic shows.
Leicester is roughly 73 km squared of land that will obviously feature famous people still living there. Sir David (broadcaster & naturalist) & Lord Richard Attenborough (actor, director & producer) are both examples of successful people that were living in Leicester. Gary Lineker, the professional footballer and sports presenter, is also a very inspirational person living in Leicester. Although he died a couple hundred years ago, Thomas Cook organised the world’s first advertised package tour from Leicester to Loughborough. In addition, by 1888 the company had established offices around the world. After that, Thomas Cook moved back to Leicestershire when he retired and stayed there until he died in 1892. However, it’s not just the old famous people living in Leicester, there is one person that stands out. Being the 2013 X Factor winner and a prison officer. Sam Bailey, in her late 30s, lives in Leicester with her husband and two children. She is a Leicester City Fan and mostly known for winning the tenth series of The X Factor. Following her win, her debut cover singly “Skyscraper” was released and gradually achieved Christmas number 1 in December 2013.
