Bournemouth has a population of over 150,000 people making it the largest settlement in the county of Dorset. The seaside town was founded in 1810 by Captain Lewis Tregonwell where the area at the time was deserted by fishermen and pirate smugglers. The rapid growth of Bournemouth started with the arrival of the railway and it became a recognised town in 1870. Bournemouth is well known for its notable Victorian architecture and the Grade 1 listed church which is called St Peter’s Church. St Peter’s Church has a spire which is an astonishing 202 foot tall. Bournemouth is also very popular with the tourists attracting over 5 million people annually with its stunning beaches and popular nightlife.

During the 12th century, Bournemouth was originally part of the county division of Holdenhurst which then extended to include the north Ashley, Muscliff, Throop, Iford, Pokesdown and Wick settlements which were also part of the Manor of Christchurch. Throughout the late 19th century and beyond, Bournemouth developed to cover these ancient settlement s along the River Stour where a skull which is thought to be over 5,500 years old was found in 1932. During the 20th Century, Bournemouth’s growth increased due to the major income from tourism having theatres, cafes, cinemas and 5 star hotels were built along the sea front.

Although that the town is quite small, it has two Universities: Bournemouth University and the Arts university Bournemouth which is located near Poole. Bournemouth University is a public university which was founded in 1992 however, its history dates back to the early 1900’s. The seaside university invested a lot of money into the media industries with students working on a number of Hollywood films which include “Gravity” which was awarded an Oscar in visual effects at the 86th Academy Awards. Bournemouth University was a finalist for two awards: “University of the Year” and “Research Project of the Year”. The popular University has over 16,000 students and is growing very rapidly due to its location. The Arts University of Bournemouth has the highest percentage of graduates entering employment or further study within six months 97%.

Bournemouth is also home to one of the oldest football teams in England which is AFC Bournemouth. The professional football club was originally called Boscombe St. John’s Institute FC which then reformed to Boscombe FC in 1899.
