Located in the Royal Borough of Windsor and Windsor is the royal town of Windsor. This beautiful town is about 23 miles away from London and is filled with historic buildings. The River Thames runs through Windsor and Eton and has a village called Old Windsor just 3 miles away from the new town to identify the two.
Although the early history of Windsor in unknown, it is highly likely that there was a settlement there before the bailey castle was constructed during 1070 AD. Throughout the 11th century, Windsor’s link was first recorded with King Edward the Confessor after the conquest of 1066. During 1121, King Henry married his second wife in Windsor castle following the White Ship disaster off the coast of Barfleur. One of the earliest bridges was built across the River Thames in Windsor which was called Windsor Bridge in 1191. The new part of Windsor was very significant during the Middle Ages being one of the wealthiest towns in the United Kingdom in 1332. The redevelopment of the Castle was the largest project in England during the middle Ages which was led by Edward III. Many building projects by Edward III brought a huge amount of funding to the town therefore doubling its population. The construction of Windsor Castle progressed into the 15th century with St George’s Chapel being built bringing in hundreds of pilgrims to touch the shrine of Henry VI. Windsor Castle is now home to Queen Elizabeth II and the flag of the UK is shown on top of the castle when she is living there.
The castle has grown to be one of the biggest attractions in the United Kingdom with millions of tourists visiting the magnificent building every year. Another global attraction in Windsor is Legoland. The Legoland Windsor resort is a theme park for children which is focussed around the popular toy of Lego. The park was established in 1996 and was the second Legoland Park after Legoland Billund which is in Denmark. The park attracted 2.2 million making it the 10th most visited theme park in Europe. There are many fun areas to go in Legoland Windsor which includes the imagination Centre, Mini land, Land of the Vikings and the Kingdom of the Pharaohs. Since the opening of the park, Legoland Windsor was voted UK’s Number One Family attraction in 1999 by Group Leisure Magazine.
Windsor is also well known for having huge parks. The Windsor Great Park has over 2000 of land which includes a deer park. The park has been around for many centuries and is now managed and funded by the Crown Estate. There are many famous monuments in Windsor Great Park which include The Copper Horse, The Royal Lodge, Cumberland Lodge and The Royal Chapel of All Saints. Most of the park is open to the public and free of charge.
