Situated upon the River Avon in the county of Warwickshire is the historic town of Warwick. The English town is located 11 miles south of Coventry and a couple of miles west from Leamington Spa and Whitnash. The large town has a population of over 50,000 people.

The earliest activity that has been recorded in Warwick was during the Neolithic times and continuous habitation since the 6th century. In 1068, the famous Warwick Castle was founded by William the Conqueror as part of the Norman conquest of England. Throughout the Medieval period, Warwick remained under control by the Earl of Warwick and the town was developed into a walled town. One of the most historic events in Warwick’s history is The Great Warwick Fire in 1694. The majority of the town was burnt down with a number of timber framed buildings survived. The great fire burnt down the church of St Mary however, the chancel and the Beauchamp Chapel survived.

The University of Warwick is a very popular research university which is located in Coventry. The Warwick University was founded in 1965 as part of the government’s plans to expand the access to higher education. Warwick has over 20,000 students and over 1,000 staff and is planned into four areas: Arts, Medicine, Science and Social Sciences in which has 32 departments altogether. Warwick arts centre is a multi-venue arts centre within Warwick University’s main campus and is the largest venue of its kind in the United Kingdom outside of London. During 2008, Warwick University started a new competition which was the Warwick Prize for writing where the winner would win £50,000. The university is ranked 48th overall by the QS World University Rankings and 92nd by the Academic Ranking of World Universities.

Warwick is also the home to many popular festivals of a variety of styles which include Classical and Contemporary Music to Folk Festivals. The Bridge House Theatre is Warwick’s most famous venue and has hosted a variety of performances for the town and visitors.
