Located 32 miles from London, in the county of Kent is the large town of Maidstone. The English county town is one of the largest in Kent having a population of over 100,000 people living there. The River Medway flows through the town and links with the Thames estuary and Rochester. In the past, the river was the main source of Maidstone’s trade routes which was also known as the Garden of England.

The first settlement in Maidstone dates back beyond the Stone Age. The Romans also invaded this town as evidence of villas and roads were found by historians. Throughout the medieval times, the Battle of Maidstone took place during the English Civil War which resulted as a win for Andrew Broughton’s Parliamentarians. Andrew Broughton was the mayor of Maidstone at the time and was the main responsibility of the death sentence of King Charles I of England. During the late 1700’s and early 1800’s the town was military established having two barracks; the Calvary barracks and the Invicta Park Barracks.

One of the many reasons to visit Maidstone is there shopping centre. The shopping centre is ranked in the top five in the South East of England, having more than one million square feet of retail floor space which was part of a £75 million project involving a multiplex cinema, restaurants, nightclubs and the Maidstone market square.

The English town has 15 secondary schools, 23 primary schools. Many famous people have been associated with the Maidstone Grammar School with lord Beeching and television presenter James Burke being students there. Lord of the Flies author William Golding was once a teacher at the school as well.

Maidstone is also home to one of the oldest Hockey clubs in England; Maidstone Hockey Club. The historic club was established in 1878 and the men’s and women’s teams have been represented in many different leagues.
